HCI Project Proposal
The second user is artists. Artists can use our platform to preview new music to fans. This provides them a great opportunity to get feedback from their dedicated fans as well as a feel for what people like, which can help the artists figure out which song off an upcoming album can be used as a single.

Project Assignment 3 - Conceptual Design
- Metaphors
- Private showing (similar to private/pre-screening of movie) (Problem Scenario #1)
- Pros
- Everybody listens at the same time
- Can get live feedback from them
- Only a select group of people can attend
- Cons
- Unlike our solution, this is much more personal (everybody in same physical location)
- Limited to people who can make it to the location
- Much more active involvement/planning from artist
- Pros
- Street Musician (Problem Scenario #1)
- Pros
- Represents an artist trying to share their music to the public
- Said artist can choose whatever music he wants
- Artist could play songs that aren’t yet available
- Cons
- No one has to actually listen to a street musician
- Usually people who do stop to listen move on
- Artist can’t choose who specifically to share with
- Restricted by location
- Pros
- Sharing headphones (Problem Scenario #2)
- Pros
- One friend sharing music with another
- Friend can choose whatever music he wants
- Cons
- Very location restrictive
- Only one friend can listen
- Pros
- Play music (CD) in car (Problem Scenario #2)
- Pros
- Simultaneous listening
- Live feedback
- Multiple people can choose the song to play
- Cons
- Limited selection of music (based on CD)
- Everybody is in same physical location
- Limited number of people
- Pros
- Negative reaction causing song-chooser to go to the next song (Problem Scenario #3)
- Pros
- Reflects feedback from all listeners
- Reflects need of majority vote
- If only one person is booing out of a big crowd, that person is unimportant
- Cons
- Identity of ‘booer’ is known
- No formal way of telling majority
- There is no actual obligation to skip, just pressure
- Pros
- Someone getting irritated and taking the phone / music player from their friend (Problem Scenario #3)
- Pros
- If this happens then the song will inevitably be changed
- Reflects the desire of at least one person to go to the next song
- Cons
- Only reflects the desire of one person to go to the next song, as opposed to a group choice
- Pros
- Private showing (similar to private/pre-screening of movie) (Problem Scenario #1)

- Problem Scenario #1 - Artist wants to share new songs to fans
Activity Design Scenario #1 - Mike is a university student who plays in a band with some friends in his spare time. After playing at a local venue a several times, his band has gained a small following. In addition, Mike’s band has been posting a few videos of their performances on social media and has gained some traction online as well. His band figured it would be a good idea to make a short album of a few original songs they made that they haven’t played live yet. In order to take advantage of the larger fan base they have online, Mike decides to use shockwa.ve to host a debut of the new album to everyone at once. Mike opens up a room and uploads the mp3 files from his new album and makes sure the order is correct, he then copies the link for the music room and sends it out to friends, family, and fans with a message that the music will start later that night. People show up later to listen, he says hi to everybody in the chat, and plays the album for everybody at the same time. As people are listening, he is able to see what they are saying about the music as they are listening to it. After the session, he does not have to worry about removing the songs, or making sure nobody shares it outside of the site since it is not possible to do so. - Problem Scenario #2 - Friends want to share music with each other
Activity Design Scenario #2 -Sandra is a high school student and found a new cool song that she wants to show her friends. She knows that a couple of her close friends are currently on their computers, so instead of posting a link to the YouTube video on each of their walls, she creates a room on shockwa.ve, adds the song she wants to show her friends by inputting the url for the YouTube video, and sends out the corresponding link to her two friends. They receive the link, navigate to the website, join the music room, and once Sandra sees that they have both joined, begins playing the music. Her friends love it and tell her so through the chat feature. She receives this feedback in real time as they send their messages, and they can continue to share music as they please. - Problem Scenario #3 - Somebody wants to skip a song in a playlist
Activity Design Scenario #3 - John and his friends like to use shockwa.ve as an online hangout while they are playing games, doing homework, or just killing time. There's typically about 8-12 close friends in the same room most weeknights. They generally switch who the presenter/DJ is between the 3 or 4 who like making playlists, while the others are content just listening to their friends’ favorite music and chatting. One night, John is in charge of making the playlist, and adds a new song to the mix. When the song comes up, John’s friend Andrew really doesn’t like it and decides to initiate a vote to skip the song and go on to the next one. Once Andrew votes to skip the song, the option to skip the song is presented to everyone else in the room. The majority of the room also doesn’t like the song, and so they decide to skip it and go on to the next one in the queue.
